Last day to file your income tax return

Today is the last day for Netherlands residents to file their income tax returns. Those who fail to do so will first receive a reminder and a warning from the Tax Authority, which could eventually turn into a fine.

The Tax Authority uses the income tax returns to determine whether you paid the right amount of tax. “If you filed a tax return before April 1, you are guaranteed to receive a message from us before July 1,” a spokesperson for the Tax Authority told the Telegraaf. Anyone who filed their returns between April 1 and 30 will get their report on or after July 1.

The report states how much the tax refund is, or how much they still have to pay the tax office. The Tax Authority will pay refunds within a week of the taxpayer receiving their final report. Those who owe the tax office money have six weeks to pay it.

Those who fail to file their income tax returns on time will receive two reminders from the Tax Authority. “If people do not submit a tax return at all, we make an estimate of their income,” the spokesperson said. The Tax Authority then submits an estimated assessment, plus a fine of 385 euros.

Last year, the Tax Authority’s website crashed on the last day to file returns, as last-minute filers scrambled to submit their returns on time.
