Riot police deployed to night of unrest in Hague's Duindorp

The riot police were deployed to the Duindorp neighborhood of The Hague on Sunday night. The neighborhood was restless until around midnight, with waste bins being set on fire and a bus stop being vandalized. This was the second night of unrest in Duindorp, NOS reports.

The likely cause of the unrest is dissatisfaction with the decision not to have a massive bonfire on Duindorp beach this New Year's. On Friday the organizers of the event pulled the plug, saying that the municipality's requirements for the bonfire makes it impossible to continue with the event.

Large bonfires are lit on the beaches in Duindorp in Scheveningen each New Year's - a tradition originally created to keep unrest out of the city during the New Year's celebrations. Over the past years, the two neighborhoods have been competing to see who can build the largest bonfire tower. Last year things got out of hand. Both towers were built much higher than agreed with the municipality. That combined with a strong wind sent a rain of sparks across Scheveningen, causing multiple small fires.
