Large parts of Lelystad without water
A large portion of Lelystad residents and businesses were either without water or had brown water flowing at low pressure from their taps on Tuesday morning, water utility Vitens confirmed. Parts of the city’s north side along the Zuigerplasdreef were also flooded amid the related water main break.
The incident was first reported at about 5:45 a.m. and repair work had begun by 7:15 a.m., the firm said. It was not immediately clear how many households were affected. Lelystad counts over 77 thousand residents.
Vitens expects the problem to be solved by 10:45 a.m.
Several schools in the area delayed opening their doors because the toilets cannot be flushed, according to Omroep Flevoland. The education facilities organized under Stichting Openbaar Onderwijs Lelystad asked parents to keep students at home until 11 a.m.
Local grocery stores were quickly selling out of water as people rushed to stock up, the broadcaster wrote. Hotel chain Haje opened locations on the A6 to local residents who need to take a shower.
The Sint Jansdal hospital and a nearby prison both have their own water supplies
