Amsterdam preparing to celebrate Ajax's 34th national title

The city of Amsterdam is getting ready to celebrate Ajax's victory in the Eredivisie and the Amsterdam team's great performance in the Champions League. For the first time since 2011, the celebration will be held on the Museumplein in the center of the city. The square opens to celebrators at 1:00 p.m., and the official festivities will start at 4:00 p.m.

Ajax has a lot to celebrate this year. On Wednesday the Amsterdam team took its 34th Eredivisie title with a 4-1 victory over De Graafschap - the team's first national title in five years. Ajax also made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League this year, before being eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur at the very last second. Over the past days the municipality made the necessary preparations to make sure the party is fun and safe for everyone.

"A unique performance by Ajax requires a unique tribute. That is why, after many years, the triangle [of mayor, police and prosecutor] chose a celebration on the Museumplein. Because we think a ceremony in the middle of the city can be festive and safe", Mayor Femke Halsema said in a press release. "We expect a large turnout of supporters from all over the country and look forward to a nice tribute to the players and the technical staff of Ajax."

Ajax dedicated their 34th national title to their fallen teammate Abdelhak Nouri, who sustained severe brain damage when he went into cardiac arrest during a match in 2017. "This one is for you", Ajax tweeted after their victory. The team also invited Abdelhak's father and brother to attend the celebration this afternoon, according to the Telegraaf.

To make sure the celebration is safe and fun for everyone, Amsterdam set a few ground rules. No glass, weapons, laughing gas or fireworks will be allowed on Museumplein. Attendees are allowed to bring food and drinks with them, but only in plastic containers or cans. Alcohol is also allowed, but only for own consumption - no more than a six pack beer. Attendees can be searched at the entrances or on the square during the event. Those who do not adhere to these rules, will be asked to leave.

Entry to the celebration is free of charge. Ajax fans can enter the Museumplein through four entrances on the south side of the square, on Van Baerlestraat, from 1:00 p.m. The official tribute will start at 4:00 p.m. and end at 6:30 p.m.
