Psychiatric prisoner caught trading weapons in clinic: report
A 24-year-old man was caught trading weapons from within the psychiatric prison in Heiloo. He was arrested last week. The man, Herman D. from Ermelo, had three cellphones and a laptop with him from which he ran his business, the Telegraaf reports.
The laptop and phones were found in the suspect's room in Heiloo, sources told the newspaper. In 2017, D. was sentenced to a short prison sentence and institutionalized psychiatric treatment, because he stabbed three men in Nieuw-Vennep, the man's lawyer confirmed to the newspaper.
D. was given a number of freedoms in the clinic, according to the Telegraaf. He was allowed to have the laptop and phones that were now seized by the police. As a result, he was able to make all the calls and send all the emails he wanted, and thus run his arms trade from within the psychiatric prison.
The man came into the police sights at the start of this year, during an investigation into large-scale trade in firearms. The converted Ekol alarm guns that D. had been selling turned up in various assassination investigations, including a recent attempted assassination, the newspaper writes.
