Football linesman arrested for headbutting supporter

A 43-year-old man from Veere was arrested on Wednesday evening for assault. The suspect was a linesman at a girls' under 15 football match in Koudekerke and headbutted a supporter after he made a comment on one of the referee's decisions, the police said in a statement.

The police were called right after the assault happened. The referee stopped the match. Responding officers spoke to the victim and a number of witnesses.

"Based on these statements, the 43-year-old suspect was arrested at his home", the police said. The arrest happened at around 8:45 p.m.

The suspect was taken to a police cell complex, where he spent the night before being questioned on Thursday.
