Two cyclists killed in accident with drunk driver, 19
Two cyclists were killed in a collision with a drunk driver on the corner of Van De Spiegelstraat and Kloetingseweg in Goes early on Sunday morning. The motorist, a 19-year-old man from Kloetinge, was arrested shortly after the accident. A breathalyzer test showed that he was under the influence of alcohol, the police said in a statement.
The accident happened around 4:15 a.m. near the Ockenburg railway crossing. Emergency services tried to resuscitate the two victims, but it was to no avail. The 33-year-old woman from Goes and her 30-year-old boyfriend from Macedonia died at the scene.
The 19-year-old man was arrested and immediately given a breathalyzer test. This showed that he was under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to a police station for questioning and is still in custody.
A number of witnesses reported to the police immediately after the accident. According to RTL Nieuws, they were cycling behind the couple when the accident happened, but did not know the couple. The police took their statements and offered them victim support. Investigators would like to make contact with any witnesses who haven't spoken to the police yet.
A trace evidence investigation was done at the scene. The area around the scene of the accident was closed for around six hours for this investigation. The road was reopened around 10:30 a.m.
