Greenco gives away millions of cherry tomatoes; unsaleable due to heat

Vegetable giant Greenco is giving away some 6 million cherry tomatoes for free. Due to the hot weather, the tomatoes saw too much sun, causing their skin to become wrinkled. They can therefore no longer be sold because their quality is too low for supermarkets.

"Of course it hurts us to give them away for free we would of course prefer to sell the tomatoes", a Greenco spokesperson said to RTL Nieuws. "But we really want to do everything to make sure that they do not disappear into the bin." The company therefore put up an advertisement on Marktplaats: tomatoes free to collect.

The ad has been viewed over 32 thousand times. And despite the fact that the tomatoes can only be collected from Friday afternoon, there were already people waiting on Friday morning. "We figured that five or ten people would come across it. That image has now been adjusted. We are ready with man and might to give the tomatoes away."

The tomatoes can be collected in Honserlersdijk and Someren on Friday afternoon. Over the weekend pick-up points will also be opened in Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague. You only need to bring a container. The offer is only valid while stocks last.
