Dutch version of Google Assistant released

Google's smart assistant can speak Dutch from Thursday. The roll-out of the Dutch version of Google Assistant started at 6:00 a.m. and should be completed within a week, a spokesperson for the tech giant confirmed to NU.nl.

Android devices will get automatic access in the coming days, provided they have Android 6.0 or higher installed. Apple users will be able to download the assistant "within a few days", as soon as Apple approves the update in the app store.

Users can ask the Google Assistant to put an appointment on their calender, for example, or to turn on music. Several special adjustments were made for the Dutch version of Google Assistant. For example, it knows that 'Appie' means supermarket chain Albert Heijn, and 'appen' means a message on WhatsApp.

Multiple Dutch websites and services also created so-called Actions for the Google Assistant. You can ask bol.com for a good gift, or get recipes from Albert Heijn, for example. Other Dutch companies that created Actions for the assistant include. Blendle, Centraal Beheer, Eneco, Essent, ING, Jumbo, KLM, KRO-NCRV, MediaMarkt, NOS, NPO, Qmusic, Rabobank, Ritual, Transavia and Unilever. Many of them can already be used, the rest will be available soon.

The Dutch Google Assistant can currently only be used on smartphones, and not yet on Google Home, Android TV and Android Auto.
