Amsterdam neighborhood gets talking trash cans

Talking trash were being installed in three locations in the Indische Buurt in Amsterdam. The bins give you a compliment when you throw trash into them, in a playful attempt to stimulate residents to use the bins instead of throwing their rubbish on the streets, Het Parool reports.

The three talking trash cans are located on Batjanstraat, on Makassarplein and on Sumatraplantsoen. They will be unveiled at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. If they prove to be effective, they will be installed in more places.

The talking bins are the latest in a rapidly increasing list of experimental ways Amsterdam is trying to reduce littering in the city. Several hundred self-pressing trash cans were previously installed in the city center. Similar ones were installed in the Red Light District last year, though these also send an email to the cleaning department when the bin is full.
