Driver in fatal Pinkpop crash did not see victims in road
Danny S., the man arrested for a fatal hit-and-run accident near the Pinkpop festival grounds in Landgraaf last week, did not see the victims sitting in the road until it was too late, his lawyer said in a statement. Because he did not see them, he could not brake or swerve out in time to avoid hitting them, according to the lawyer, NOS reports.
After the accident, S. was in shock and drove home in a haze, the lawyer said in the statement. He does not remember anything that happened. He later regretted that he drove off and once he was back to his senses, he voluntarily went to the police.
S. had no intention of endangering others and is himself traumatized, his lawyer said. He was questioned by the police for over 10 hours last week, and cooperated fully. Mensheggerweg, where the accident happened, was open when he drove there, according to S. "The client only drove on the road, had his lights on and emphasized that he did not see people in the road", the lawyer said.
One man was killed and three others were injured in the collision, which happened close to Pinkpop's campground B just after 4:00 a.m. on Monday, June 18th. The three injured festival goers are still in critical condition in hospital, according to the broadcaster.
S. was released from custody on Friday. According to the Public Prosecutor, there are no indications that the collision was intentional.
