Possible hand grenades found on Nieuwegein street
Items that look like hand grenades were found on Magrietstraat in Nieuwegein on Wednesday morning. The police evacuated the street as a precaution, NU.nl reports.
The possible explosives were found around 7:30 a.m. According to RTV Utrecht, one grenade was left in front of a home. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Defense recovered and removed the items. The police can not yet say whether they are real grenades, only that they "have the appearance of grenades".
The police are still investigating on the street, so evacuated residents are not yet able to return to their homes. Shelter was arranged for them at nearby Fort Vreeswijk.
In February, hand grenades were found in the same neighborhood - under a car and in front of a house on Beatrixstraat. Mayor Frans Backhuijs then decided that the residens had to leave their home for three months, in the interest of the safety of the neighborhood.
"There is as yet no reason to assume a connection", the police said to the newspaper.
