40 pct. of Dutch reuse online passwords
Four in ten Dutch use the same password for multiple online services, such as email, social media and online banking, according to a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and Security. One in five said they use the same password for more than 10 different accounts, NU.nl reports.
The survey also found that two-thirds of Dutch expect to come into contact with cyber crime more often in the coming years. Despite this, not everyone is taking measures to protect themselves. Half of Dutch don't install software updates regularly, which means they remain susceptible to abuse through vulnerabilities in the software. Four in ten Dutch also regularly log on to a public WiFi network, which makes them vulnerable to important data being intercepted.
On Monday the Ministry of Justice and Security launched a campaign on social media to make Dutch people more aware of cyber crime, and how to protect themselves against it. This campaign includes ads on Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat, as well as the public broadcasters.
