Dutch PM Rutte calls for quick clarity on the U.K.'s Brexit plans
Prime Minister Mark Rutte wants more clarity from the British government about the course they plan to take now that they're leaving the European Union, he said after his visit with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday.
"The clock is ticking and we need to move fast. I sincerely hope that we'll succeed in reaching agreements that are good for us all", Rutte said on Twitter. "In view of our close economic ties, it is clearly crucial for the Netherlands and Dutch business to ensure a strong relationship post-Brexit. So the British government really needs to offer more clarity about where it wants to go."
Rutte also thanked May for the warm welcome. "One thing is certain: the UK and the Netherlands are good friends and key partners, and Brexit will not change that."
On Monday Rutte also met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss an informal summit of EU leaders on Friday. According to the Telegraaf, Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron want put more effort into integration in Europe, but Rutte is hesitant to give his full cooperation. The Dutch Prime Minister is also against pushing more money into the European budget, and setting money aside to deal with future euro zone problems. According to him, countries first need to get their own finances in order.
"For the Netherlands, the guiding principle is that EU cooperation must deliver clear results", Rutte said after the meeting. "The Netherlands and Germany will keep working together to tackle the challenges facing the EU. In that regard, regular meetings like this are vital."
