Criminals have free reign on small Dutch airports: Military Police

The Koninklijke Marechaussee is calling for more supervision and security at small airports in the Netherlands, Trouw reports. The lack of supervision at the 11 smaller airports in the country makes them vulnerable to drug- and human trafficking, according to the newspaper.

The Koninklijke Marechaussee is a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for airport security.

There is currently no permanent physical supervision at the small airports, such as those in Hilversum, Breda, Budel, Teuge and Drachten. The Marechaussee consider the airports' surroundings "a potential gathering place for criminal activities, including drug and human trafficking", according to the newspaper.

The Marechaussee sometimes performs checks at the small airports. How many and how often exactly, the organization can not say for "operational reasons". But according to the newspaper, the small airports are unguarded most of the time."
