Boy, 14, suspected of killing parents in Friesland double murder

A 14-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the murders of a couple in Katlijk, Friesland. The bodies of a 63-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were found in a home on Schoterlandseweg on Tuesday. They were the arrested boy's parents, the police announced.

The couple's home is located in a large building on a farm in Katlijk, which forms part of the municipality of Heerenveen. There is also a classroom in the building. Residents of another part of the farm found the bodies, according to RTL Nieuws.

The victims have three sons, the 14-year-old suspect is the youngest. The police spoke with his older brothers on Tuesday.. A police spokesperson would not tell RTL where they boy was arrested or how the couple died. The boy will be questioned on Wednesday morning.

The community of Katlijk, which has about 600 residents, is shocked by what happened, Heerenveen mayor Tjeerd van der Zwan said in a statement on Tuesday night. According to the mayor, the family was not in contact with any aid organizations "as far as is known". "That such an event makes a deep impression on the people, I don't have to tell you", the mayor said. "I'm keeping close contact with the village. To hear what is going on, what questions there are and where we can possibly help. First thing now is what the people here need. Our sympathy goes out to the relatives. We wish them a lot of strength."
