Three Amsterdam Airbnb rentals used as pop-up brothels

Last year the municipality of Amsterdam found illegal prostitution in three Airbnb rentals during checks, the municipality said in answers to questions from PvdA city councilor Dennis Boutkan. This problem in Amsterdam is much smaller than in Great Britain, where the police recently warned homeowners of a growing trend, AT5 reports.

The Amsterdam municipality is not worried about this yet, and sees no sign of an emerging trend in the Dutch capital. If signs of Airbnb rentals being used as brothels are found, the owner or resident of the property will be held responsible for facilitating illegal prostitution.

Homes are checked for illegal prostitution based on advertisements on websites, which a special team of the police keeps an eye on. The checks are mainly aimed at fighting human trafficking, according to the broadcaster.
