Police close down Amsterdam street over possible explosive

The Amsterdam police closed down part of Amstelstraat, near the Rembrandtplein, on Thursday morning after an item believed to be an explosive was found. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is investigating, NU.nl reports.

According to local broadcaster AT5, the explosive may be a hand grenade. It was found near the ABE nightclub.

At this stage the police believe it unnecessary to evacuate the area. How long the street will be closed is not yet clear.

The street closure is causing some problems with tram traffic. Lines 9 and 14 currently have to take a different route.
