Busy day at Schiphol: record 230,000 passengers expected

Today is expected to be Schiphol airport's busiest day of the year. A record number of 230 thousand passengers are traveling through the airport on Monday, six thousand more than the previous record established last month, NOS reports.

Most of the travelers are only passing through - 81 thousand people are stepping from one flight to another at the Amsterdam airport today. Over 78 thousand are departing and 71 thousand are arriving with the Netherlands as destination.

Schiphol expects that over 12.4 million people will travel through the airport this summer. A number of extra measures were taken to handle the crowds and avoid super long waiting lines.

One such measure is a separate security check line for people traveling without hand luggage. According to NOS, initial assessments show that 15 to 20 percent more travelers pass through this security check than through the others.
