Knife wielding man shot twice in the leg by police
The police in Badhoevedorp shot a man with a knife twice in the leg while arresting him at around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, the police said in a statement.
Police officers confronted the 29-year-old man, with no permanent address, on Nieuwemeerdijk. He came walking towards them with the knife in his hand. The man ignored verbal commands to stop, pepper spray and a warning shot. The police were only able to overpower him after a second shot to his leg.
Shortly before his arrest, the man robbed a 66-year-old woman on Nieuwemeerdijk. The woman was driving in her car when the man managed to stop her. He pulled open the door, threatened her with a knife and grabbed her handbag.
The woman managed to fight him off, sustaining minor stab wounds on her hand and arm, and sped away. Once the man was behind her, she called the police.
According to the police, the man still had the woman's handbag on him when he was caught.
The suspect is in custody for further investigation.
