Body of missing sailor, 18, found off Vlissingen coast

The body of missing sailor Hannes Goegebeur, 18, was found off the coast of Vlissingen on Thursday night. The young Terneuzen man went missing when his sailboat capsized during a sailing contest off the coast of Oostende, Belgium two weeks ago. His family was informed, AD reports.

Fishermen found Goegebeur's body around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Two other sailors - 79-year-old Frans Maas and 71-year-old Freddy Franssens - were also killed when the sailing boat Capella capsized due to a broken keel. Three other crew members managed to climb onto the boat's hull and were rescued by a dredging ship. Goegebeur disappeared into the water. They were participating in the Light Vessel Race.

Goegebeur was a vehement sailor who would have graduated from the Scalda College in Terneuzen on Thursday. The young man was commemorated at the graduation ceremony by his mentor, teachers and classmates, according to AD.
