Woman gives birth on public bus with help from driver, passengers
A woman gave birth on an Arriva Bus in Breda on Sunday evening. The baby boy was born on line 115 on Markendaalseweg, with the help of bus driver and passengers, Omroep Brabant reports.
Bus driver Frans Videler saw in his mirror that something was up with the woman. He heard a shout and saw her water break. He pulled the bus over, let traffic control know via the emergency button and called the emergency services. He was still on the line when the baby was born
"It happened very fast. Within twenty seconds the child was in the world", he said to Omroep Brabant. Frans and two other passengers wrapped the baby in a scarf and made the mother comfortable while they waited for the ambulance to arrive. At the advice of the emergency services, the umbilical cord was tied with a shoelace.
Mother and son were eventually taken to hospital in an ambulance. Both are doing well, according to Arriva.
