Baby kidnapped in Breda; disturbed man arrested
A 33-year-old man was arrested in Oosterhout on Monday afternoon after he kidnapped a baby in Breda. The baby was found safe and unharmed, still in the man's possession. Paramedics took care of the baby while the seemingly disturbed man was arrested, AD reports.
The man has some kind of connection with the child, though the police would not confirm the relationship due to privacy concerns. The police did say that the man had an appointment with aid workers and a woman at aid organization Veilig Thuis and that he took the baby from there.
The police were concerned that the man wanted to harm himself and the child, because he gave a disturbed impression. For that reason trains around Breda were instructed to drive very slowly, in case they had to make a sudden stop. Local residents were informed of the kidnapping via Burgernet. Travelers were asked to keep an eye out for the man on trains and buses. And the police launched a major manhunt, including sniffer dogs and a helicopter.
The kidnapper was eventually tracked down in Oosterhout, where numerous local residents witnessed the police arresting him. One managed to film the man running past his car holding the baby, with police officers following. According to witness Joery, the man did indeed seem to be having a breakdown or something. "He kept screaming that they wanted to take everything away from him." he said to AD.
