Mostly naked man arrested in Arnhem armed standoff

A SWAT team arrested a man clad only in his underwear in Arnhem after an armed standoff on Wednesday. The armed man barricaded himself in the district center on Rappardstraat and the police worked under the assumption that there were hostages in the building. According to the police, the situation is under control, ANP reports.

The police responded to the scene en masse after reports of an armed man on the street. A large part of the Klarendal neighborhood was evacuated, and people still in their homes were instructed to stay inside.

The police instructed the suspect to undress before arresting him. This was to make sure that he was not wearing any form of weapon or explosion. Robots were used to search his clothing.

It is still unclear whether the man did indeed take hostages. As far as is known, no one was injured in the standoff.

The standoff brought train traffic between Arnhem and Zevenaar to a halt. NS deployed buses to transport passengers. It is not yet clear when train traffic will be restarted. Passengers should take up to 45 minutes of extra travel time into account.
