Girl, 16, dies after being hit by Amsterdam tram

A 16-year-old girl was hit by a tram at the intersection of Burgemeesteer Van Leeuwenlaan and Burgemeester Roellstraat in Slotermeer, Amsterdam on Monday afternoon. She died at the scene, Het Parool reports.

The accident happened around 1:40 p.m. Bystanders report that the girl was dragged a couple of meters by the tram.

Local residents told AT5 that they've repeatedly sounded the alarm about the dangerous situation at the intersection, but so far their warnings were ignored.

The tram driver was taken to a police station for questioning. According to the police, this is standard procedure in fatal accidents. The tram driver was not under the influence of alcohol, a police spokesperson said, according to Het Parool.

The police area still looking for information and call on witnesses to come forward.
