Some 185 bikers killed on Dutch roads last year

Last year 185 cyclists were killed in accidents on Dutch roads, 115 men and 70 women, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. The number of cycling deaths in the Netherlands has been around 180 per year since 2004, though the total number of traffic fatalities halved in the last 20 years.

In the period between 2011 and 2015, the most fatal bicycle accidents happened in September and October. Between November and February the number of bicycle deaths was the lowest, though people do tend to cycle less during the cold months. If the number of cycling kilometers are taken into account, the number of bicycle deaths is highest in December and October, and lowest in February.

The majority of fatal bicycle accidents - 37 percent - happened between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. These are also the times with most cyclists on the roads. Between midnight and 7:00 a.m., the fewest cycling accidents happened.
