Couple killed in Tilburg hit-and-run were teachers

Two pedestrians killed in a hit-and-run accident in Tilburg on Thursday night were both teachers by profession, the Telegraaf reports. Bert van der Veeken, 62, was a lecturer at the integrated child center De Wereldwijzer and his 59 year old wife Henriette taught ad De Brakken in Rijen for 20 years, according to the newspaper.

De Wereldwijzer cancelled all classes for Friday. The teaching team came together to grieve for their colleague Bert, an employee said to the Telegraaf.

The couple lived in Rijen. On Thursday night they were crossing Bredasweg in Tilburg when they were hit by a car. A witness told the Telegraaf that the driver maneuvered his car around the woman lying on the asphalt and sped off.

The police launched a manhunt. They found the car involved in the accident on Haverhof - about 500 meters from where the couple died as the crow flies, according to the Telegraaf. Two brothers, age 20 and 23, were later released. One is the owner of the car, the other the driver, the police believe. They are being questioned.
