D66 MP concerned about suicide rate among young LGBT's

D66 parliamentarian Pia Dijkstra is worried about high suicide rates among gay and transgender young people. She is calling on the government to come up with effective measures to prevent young people in this group ending their lives prematurely, the Telegraaf reports.

On Thursday Dijkstra is handing Minister Jet Bussemaker of Education, Culture and Science an action plan titled "Thinking beyond the box". The plan is focused on promoting the emancipation of minorities, including sexual minorities. It recommends, among other things, keeping a better eye on young gay and transgender people, improving care in hospitals and having schools pay more attention to sex education.

According to the D66, research shows that suicide in young gay and transgender people is often associated with "gay bullying".
