Video referee shows worth in Feyenoord vs FC Oss match
The video referee was called in to make a decision in the amatch between Feyenoord and FC Oss on Thursday night, the Telegraaf reports.
During the second half of the match in De Kuip stadium, referee Pol van Boekel hesitated over whether or not to award a penalty after an altercation between FC Oss player Dominique Kivivu and Feyenoord striker Michiel Kramer.
The arbitrator called in Danny Makkelie, who watched the footage of exactly what happened from outside the stadium. He eventually decided that the pushing and shoving was not severe enough for a penalty, after which Van Boekel gave Steven Berghuis the penalty.
This is the second time the video referee made an important decision in a Dutch football match. Previously in the match between Ajax and Willem II a yellow card was turned into a red card against Anouar Kali after a hard tackle.
Dutch football association decided the launch an experiment with the video referee early this year, in an effort to judge the value it adds to matches.
