Belgians with fake gun arrested at Schiphol
Four Belgians between the ages of 21 and 23 years were arrested at Schiphol airport on Thursday afternoon after the Koninklijke Marechaussee discovered a fake gun that was "not distinguishable from a real handgun" in their car, the Marechaussee writes on Facebook.
The Koninklijke Marechaussee - a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for airport security - pulled over the Belgian's car on Ceintuurbaan at Schiphol for a random check. The officers found the gun and, mistaking it for a real gun, arrested all four men in the car.
Investigation showed that the gun was a fake weapon and the Marechaussee saw no sign that the four young men had any terrorist motors. An official report was filed against the owner of the gun, the driver of the car. The other three were released as they had no knowledge of the weapon.
The Marechaussee are searching random cars on the roads towards Schiphol Airport as part of additional security measures implemented on July 30th after a "signal" was received of a possible terrorism threat against the airport. Those security measures were scaled back somewhat on Thursday.
