Cop shares saga of shooting aggressive dog
A police officer who shot and killed an aggressive dog after he attacked a person at a block party in Santpoort on Monday, decided to explain what happened after videos of the incident caused an uproar on social media. He told his tale on IJmond police's Facebook account.
According to the officer, he was approached by someone reporting a "stressed" fighting dog near the party around 11:00 p.m. on Monday. At first the officers thought that all was well, as the dog jumped into his owner's arms.
But then the dog walked to another man bit him in the groin. "We did not expect that at all! The dog would not let go, actually biting down tighter. We saw the jeans tear and a bite wound", the officer writes.
"One man said it was his dog and that the animal had gone mad. The man who was bitten screamed and there was a panic. The man claiming to be the owner called on us to shoot the dog because it was unstoppable. He was also worried that the dog would attack someone else."
The officer hesitated, he writes. "I considered what to do, luckily I don't deal with this often and this is not a situation you are trained for. I could do nothing else but get my gun out. I told the man to keep his leg still because I didn't want him getting hurt more. Luckily he listened. I scanned the area and thought I could shoot safely, so I would not hit bystanders. I asked again whether the owner was sure, if he agrees. He also so no other way. I pressed down until the dog let go and fell. It happened so fast. The dog appeared to die right away."
Part of the social media commotion arose because in one of the videos it looks like the bitten man wants to hit the officer. "He did not want to hit me, but gave me a high five, as a thank you. That is unfortunately not in the video."
According to the officer, the owner and his mother picked up the dog at the ambulance station the next day. "He is understanding, that could have been different. Fortunately. This way I can also handle it more easily. It still bothers me", the officer writes. "I hope the readers realize that this man really did not go to the party with his dog to let this happen. There are only losers in this incident. I wish strength to the owner and his friends."
"Today at my neighbors I'm catching 10 escaped guinea pigs. I lie on my stomach between conifers and try to grab the running beasts. Fortunately this is going in a nicer way than yesterday.. They're all back in their cage!"
