Ten year prison sentence for murdering three family members

A young man from Veghel was sentenced to 10 years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric care for murdering his sister, mother and grandmother in September last year, Omroep Brabant reports On September 1st last year, the then 17-year-old boy strangled his 10-year-old sister Adilenur before beating his mother Nieriman (50) and grandmother Hatun Soysal to death with a dumbbell. According to the Public Prosecutor, the three victims were "completely powerless against this explosive violence". Despite the suspect was underage when he committed the murders, the Public Prosecutor asked that the now 18-year-old be tried as an adult, given the seriousness of his offenses. The court agreed. The suspect is autistic and was suicidal since June last year. On the day he committed the murders, he was afraid that his family would stop him committing suicide. The court sentenced the young man to 10 years in prison, because he checked several times to see if his family members were still alive and had time to change his mind. Given the boy's mental state, he has diminished accountability and was also sentenced to institutionalized psychiatric care. The young man says that he does not regret his actions.
