Utrecht trains cancelled into Monday rush hour

Only a very limited amount of train traffic will be possible from and to Utrecht Central Station on Monday morning. The construction works on the tracks around the station over the weekend took longer than expected and will continue into Monday morning, both NS and ProRail announced. Train travelers are advised to avoid the station as much as possible. There are currently no trains between Utrecht Central Station and Breukelen and between Utrecht and Geldermalsen. NS' current prognosis is that this situation will last until 9:00 a.m. Only Sprinters are traveling between Utrecht and Amersfoort. NS and ProRail are so concerned about overcrowding the station that they are asking people to work from home if possible. ProRail advises travelers who do need to take the trains to keep a close eye on travel advice and plan their journey carefully through NS' travel planner before starting out. A ProRail spokesperson called the situation "annoying but necessary" to news wire ANP. Despite a very tight work schedule and up the minute planning, the work is taking longer than hoped, he said. "NS is deploying buses, but the rush hour will be difficult around Utrecht station", he said. "We find it certainly annoying for travelers", ProRail spokesperson Lucas Stassen said to the Volkskrant. "We have done everything in our power to complete the work on time. With some tasks we managed that well within the time, with some it simply just took longer." The works around Utrecht Central Station started on Thursday night and was expected to be finished by Sunday evening. ProRail is working on platforms, tracks, overhead and the security system at 11 locations on both sides of the station.
