Ajax coach quits after Eredivisie loss
Frank de Boer resigned as coach of Ajax, the Amsterdam club announced in a press release on Thursday. After two disappointing seasons, it is time for something new, De Boer said.
"After winning four league titles in a row, 2014-2015 was a disappointment", De Boer said. "We wanted to rectify that last season, we tried tried everything to do so. But it did not work out like we hoped and expected. I began to realize more and more that it is time for something else. That is better for me and I think also for Ajax."
De Boer's contract with Ajax runs until July 1st next year. But after consultation, the club and De Boer agreed to terminate it. The now former Ajax coach does not know what he will do next. "I'll see what comes my way." he said.
"Above all I cherish the beautiful memories, with winning the 30th league title as absolute highlight." De Boer concludes. "Wherever I am, I will continue to follow closely. Ajax is my club and will always be."
The resignation did not come as a surprise, according to director Edwin van der Sar. "We are sorry that he is leaving, but when he announced that this is his decision, we terminated his contract by mutual agreement. When you look at all he has won, but also the way he always had an eye for the flow of our talents, he deserves nothing less."
Assistant coach Orlando Trustfull's contract ends on July 1st this year. He will also be leaving the club.
Ajax lost the Eredivisie title to PSV by drawing against De Graafschap on Sunday.
