Girl, 3, calls emergency line after being left home alone all day

A 3-year-old girl in Winterswijk called emergency line 112 on Monday afternoon to report that she's been home alone all day. Police officers responded and found the child at home by herself. "She had no idea where her mother was and when asked whether she had something to eat, she said she only ate a bread stick", police officer Willem Saris said to newspaper Gelderlander. The mother was tracked down. She said she was buying groceries. Exactly how long she was away from home is unclear.

#Winterswijk #Europalaan kind van 3 jaar belde 112. Was alleen thuis. Bleek idd het geval. Moeder was weg. Haar opgespoord. #Jeugdzorg ikg

The case was reported to care organization Veilig Thuis, as is standard procedure in such a case, according to Saris. An investigation will be done to determine whether further action or assistance is necessary. "On the one had you can say that the child responded well by calling 112. On the other hand, it is very sad that this happened." Saris said to the newspaper.
