Fugitive convicted of murder shot in assassination attempt

A 31 year old fugitive was injured in the foot when he was open fired upon in what seems to be an attempted assassination in Kaatsheuvel on Saturday night. He is being treated in a prison hospital. The police are looking for the perpetrators. According to the police, the shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday on Berndijksestraat. The fugitive victim managed to bring himself to safety in a hiding spot, where he hid until the police arrived. When the police arrived, they discovered the victim was wanted by the Public Prosecutor. He escaped from prison over the past year and still has a sentence to serve. He was therefore transferred to a prison hospital for treatment in police custody. According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, the fugitive is 31 year old Toon D. from Tilburg. In 2009 he was convicted of murdering Flavio Fadda and sentenced to 12 years in prison. D. was allowed leave from prison last summer, but never returned. Shortly after the shooting the police discovered a burning Mercedes Vito bus on Tussenbaan in De Moer. The fire department distinguished the fire and the vehicle was towed away for a trace evidence investigation. The police are investigating whether the car fire and shooting are connected.
