Human trafficking arrests on the rise near the borders
Since the border security and patrols in the Netherlands were strengthened in September, the number of human trafficking arrests increased from an average of 14 per month to an average of 23 per month. A total of 80 suspects were arrested since September, news wire ANP reports.
According to State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff of Security and Justice, the increase in arrests show that the mobile checks are an effective tool in combating human traffickers.
Last year the marechaussee, a policing force working as a branch of the military, arrested a total of 330 people suspected of human trafficking, 60 more than in 2014. The majority, 25 percent, of the suspects are of Dutch nationality. About 15 percent are Syrian.
