Prosecutors to demand tough sentences in anti-asylum riot
The Public Prosecutor plans to demand jail time and community service against all 15 suspects arrested for rioting against the arrival of an asylum center in Geldermalsen on December 16th, the prosecutor announced on Tuesday, news wire ANP reports.
The harsh sentence demands will also apply to any suspects arrested in connection with these riots in future. The police are still investigating, with 20 detectives working on the case.
The Prosecutor's announcement follows a group of Geldermalsen launching a fundraising campaign on Facebook to pay any eventual fines. They want to show understanding for the high running emotions during the council meeting in December, according to the news wire.
The plan for the asylum center in Geldermalsen was withdrawn. The city council will discuss the state of affairs on January 26th.
