Debit card record with 528 transactions per second before Christmas

Last minute Christmas shopping in the Netherlands led to a record breaking 528 debit card transactions per second between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Netherlands Payments Association announced, ANP reports. Wednesday had a total of 16.3 million debit card transactions, totaling in an amount of more than 479 million euros, and Thursday a total of 14.8 million transactions totaling in an amount of 430 million euros. Between Saturday and Thursday at 5:00 p.m., there were 74 million debit card transactions, an increase of 28 percent compared to the same period last year. The Dutch spent an estimated 2.15 billion euros with debit card payments this year.
