High school student killed in France rappelling accident

A school outing to Ardennes in France ended in tragedy when 14 year old pupil Sieb van Went fell to his death while abseiling on Thursday. His classmates and teachers saw it happen. Sieb van Went had just started his third year at the Teylingen College Leeuwenhorst in Noordwijkerhout. His class was on a sporty trip in France, which would have ended on Friday. "This is a huge shock for all of us", Cees Slats, rector of the school, writes on the school website. "Our thoughts go out firstly to the parents and immediate family, who have to process a terrible blow today." The school trip was cancelled immediately and the rest of Sieb's class is heading back to the Netherlands on Friday. The Belgian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, according to Dutch newspaper AD. According to the school, the company that organized the tour is reliable. The school tried to process the news with parents and students on the school's forum on Thursday. Employees of the Center for Youth and Family and Victim Support will be at the school on Friday to help with the processing of the loss. "We will work with students who need it, try to process this indescribable grief", Slats writes.
