Video: Patient sings Schubert opera during awake brain surgery

Slovenian opera singer Ambroz Bajec-Lapajne has posted a video on YouTube of him singing Gute Nacht by Schubert while undergoing awake brain surgery. The singer was diagnosed with a brain tumor that had to be surgically removed. The surgeons recommended an awake-brain surgery and asked him to sing during the operation so that they can monitor when the speech center in his brain is affected. The surgery was done at the Utrecht University medical center. Everything goes well in the video until the about 2:40 minute mark, when his speech is affected. It recovers a few moments later. Bajec-Lapajne says that it has now been more than a year since the surgery. He says he is doing well, and continuing his singing career.
