Police shoot man at asylum center
A man was shot down by the police at the asylum center in Winterswijk on Thursday morning. He was taken to the hospital. The condition of the wounded man is unknown.
The incident happened around 10:00 a.m. According to the police, officers responded to a report that a "crazed" man was posing a threat to his surroundings. Officers first fired a warning shot and then an aimed shot, which hit the man. A spokesperson for the police told Radio Gelderland that the officers first tried to calm the man down before any shots were fired.
According to the police, the asylum center is once again safe. No one else was injured in the incident.
The man is a resident of the asylum center, according to NU. His nationality is unknown. It is also not clear what triggered his freak out.
The asylum center on Amstelstraat in Winterswijk has room for 400 residents. The center consists of independent units and is suitable to later be used as starter homes if it is no longer needed for refugees.
