Government wants end to gender identification

Standard male or female gender information may soon disappear from government documents. The idea is advocated by the both the right and left wing parties making up the ruling coalition, the VVD and PvdA. Conservative VVD MP Jeroen van Wijngaarden, one of the initiative's authors, believes gender identification on documents is outdated. "Transgender people and people who do not feel clearly male or female experience legal pressure to choose a side," said Wijngaarden. The indication of gender on documents like a driver's license is unnecessary, which really only need to define whether if someone can drive, the MP argues. The ruling parties are now looking at ways to implement the initiative.
