Labour party considering higher national property taxes
The PvdA is considering an increase in property taxes in the context of a new tax system, De Telegraaf reports. The VVD is against raising taxes for only homeowners.
In the new tax system the government would be seeking notably to reduce the tax on labor. This would mean less money for the treasury. State Secretary of Finance Eric Wiebes is currently examining whether it would be possible to cut back on government expenses to the municipalities to compensate for the decreased income. The municipalities, in turn, would then be given more opportunities to levy taxes themselves to compensate for their decreased income.
Wiebes is still consulting with political parties regarding the outlines of a new tax system. He hopes to be able to present it to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, before the summer.
