WWII memorial planned for Nijmegen's "Bridge Too Far"

The municipality of Nijmegen wants to put a plaque on the new city bridge De Oversteek to commemorate the famous passage by American soldiers on September 20th, 1944, De Gelderlander reports. "Thousands of people cross this bridge every day. Many Nimegen residents know that there was a fierce battle at this place in 1944 and that 48 American soldiers were killed, but there are also many people who still do not know." Mayor Hubert Bruls said. He wants the memorial to be installed on the pedestrian part of the bridge as soon as possible, possibly as early as May. Every evening at sunset a group of Dutch war veterans and their friends and family walk a cross the bridge, the so called Sunset March, to honor the allied soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom of the Netherlands in WWII. This particular World War II operation was called Operation Market Garden. A movie based on this operation called A Bridge too Far, starring Sean Connery, Ryan O'Neal and Michael Caine, came out in 1977.
