Schiphol traveller busted dodging €17,000 in fines
The Dutch Marechaussee busted a 26-year old man who had fines worth of 17,000 euros at the Schiphol Airport on Wednesday. He was required to pay the fine on the spot, or spend 504 days in jail to cover the debt.
Marechaussee officers at Schiphol Plaza discovered 72 unpaid fines associated with his name. Once they verified the data, they gave him the choice between paying the fine or spending about 17 months in custody.
After paying the fines the man was released.
The Marechaussee is a branch of the Dutch military tasked with policing duties. The organization is responsible for a large portion of security at airports in the Netherlands.
