Stedelijk Museum receives gift of 175 artworks

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam has received a sizable donation from the artists Coosje van Bruggen and Claes Oldenburg, NRC reports. The museum received a total of 175 artworks by 34 artists, including works from artists Carl Andre, Hanne Darboven, Anselm Kiefer, Bruce Nauman, Jeff Wall and Lawrence Weiner. According to NRC, the Stedelijk Museum has a strong relationship with the couple. Van Bruggen was a curator at the Stedelijk Museum between 1967 and 1971, and met the American artist Claes Oldenburg during that time. "Although Coosje van Bruggen and Claes Oldenburg lived in America they have always been very closely involved in the Stedelijk Museum. We are thrilled that they have decided to place their collections in the Stedelijk." Director Beatrix Ruf said in a press release. "It was natural to give thee works to the Stedelijk." Daughter Maartje Oldenburg said to NRC Handelsblad. "Many artworks were gifts to my mother from artists she befriended in her years as curator. These works will fit nowhere as well as in the Stedelijk."
