Retirement age edging up in the Netherlands
According to Statistics Netherlands, the average retirement age increased further in 2014 to 64.1 years. That is 0.2 years higher than in 2013 and 0.5 years higher than in 2012.
The average retirement age has been increasing steadily every year since 2007, when the average age at which workers retire was 61 years old. This is partly due to the introduction of amendments to law and rules to continue working longer. Statistics Netherlands reports that the direct impact of the one month per year increase in the AOW-age from January 1st, 2013 is limited on the average retirement age of workers.
2014 was the first time that more than half of the employees were 65 years old or older at the time of retirement There were 3.1 million pensioners in 2014.
