Woman badly injured in car explosion

A 48-year-old woman from Oploo was hospitalized with severe burn wounds early this morning, when her car blew up.

The incident happened at Zandvoortsestraat in Langenboom around 1.00am. By the time fire fighters arrived they found the woman lying on the ground, unconscious, with her car in flames in a ditch. When they started extinguishing the flames they found a gas cylinder in the trunk, according to news reports from Omroep Brabant.

The vehicle burned out completely. It appeared the gas cylinder had caused the explosion. Debris and car parts were lying around the car and even landed in a nearby meadow. Residents said they thought a bomb had exploded.

Police searched the area for possible passengers, but none were found.
