TV show buys Kalashnikov with ease

The TV program Editie NL managed to purchase a Kalashnikov without much difficulty. Not only was it relatively easy to buy this heavy assault weapon, but it was also arranged very quickly. The editors of Editie NL had the automatic in their hands within two weeks. The weapon was destroyed immediately after purchase. The Amsterdam police chief Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg recently said that the arms trade has little priority in the national police. He is advocating to put the trade in firearms higher on the agenda. Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan also recently spoke of how easy it is for criminals to get hold of automatic weapons. Editie NL spoke to several experts who also think that much more needs to be done to detect such heavy weapons. Gerrit van der Kamp, president of the police union ACP, stated. "The police and Public Prosecution now looks away when it comes to finding them. This must change quickly. These heavy weapons are life threateningly dangerous to the police and citizens." The National Police has stated that there are no separate teams investigating arms trafficking or firearm possession. "Detection is done ad hoc, if there is sufficient information. It is not a priority in the appointed national security aggenda for the police", a spokesperson said.
